Trailer telematics guide: understand, choose, maximize your return

Trailer telematics covers all the technologies used to monitor the condition, the location and the use of a fleet’s trailers in real time. Sensors and a GPS module installed on each trailer transmit precise data: tire pressure, component temperature, movements and operating conditions.

How a telematics system works on a trailer

A telematics system relies on two elements: sensors installed on the trailer and a communication module that transmits the data. Fleet managers can then continuously monitor tire pressure, the temperature of critical components, vibration, load distribution, movements and operating conditions for every unit. All of this data converges on a single platform, where it becomes dashboards and alerts.

GPS tracking: location and protection against theft

The GPS side gives constant visibility on the location of every trailer. Fleet managers can set up geofences, receive an alert when a unit leaves an authorized zone or is moved without permission, and detect suspicious tampering attempts. This tracking lowers theft risk, improves equipment recovery and keeps freight secure throughout transport, for local operations as well as long-haul ones. It also makes trip planning and delivery coordination easier.

Predictive maintenance: act before the breakdown

Continuous monitoring of critical components changes the logic of maintenance. Instead of absorbing breakdowns, teams receive automated alerts as soon as a parameter moves outside the normal range and can act before a problem causes downtime, a fire linked to mechanical components or a more costly incident. The result: fewer unplanned breakdowns, easier maintenance planning, lower maintenance costs and equipment that lasts longer.

From reactive to proactive management

Without real-time visibility, managing a trailer fleet happens in reaction mode. Telematics provides precise data on the use, the maintenance and the movements of every unit. That data helps plan operations better, reduce downtime and improve coordination between the maintenance teams and operations.

By centralizing data on a single platform, fleet managers track all of their trailers, analyze performance and make decisions based on concrete information. Telematics becomes a strategic tool to improve the profitability of operations, optimize asset use and strengthen the security of equipment and freight.

What telematics brings to a fleet

The benefits documented across the Exalt pages fall into four families:

Safety

Monitoring of critical parameters (TPMS, temperatures, vibration, load) and fast alerts before a breakdown or a fire.

Asset protection

Real-time location, geofencing, fewer thefts and better equipment recovery.

Profitability

Less unplanned downtime, lower emergency maintenance costs, longer equipment life.

Decision-making

Concrete data rather than estimates, for planning, performance analysis and delivery reliability.

Choosing a solution: the EX-TRA series example

The Exalt EX-TRA series fits different trailer types: dry vans, refrigerated, tankers and specialized units. It can be installed on existing fleets without changing the processes already in place, which allows a gradual telematics rollout. Three models cover the needs:

Model

EX-TRA 100

GPS tracking and management

Model

EX-TRA 200

Refrigerated trailers

Model

EX-TRA 300

Advanced tracking for all trailer types, sensors included
